In Paris’s 13th arrondissement, a few steps away from the Héloïse and Abélard Square, Studio Malka designed a fully flexible space.
The scope statement mandated a need for multipurpose spaces: a showroom, working spaces, an exhibition space, and living spaces.

To allow this flexibility, we created, developed, and patented floating wall systems, suspended less than a quarter inch above the floor and below the ceiling. These elements that include walls and full height doors are patented under the name of MuMo (Mur Mobiles in French, meaning Mobile Walls).

This system enables multiple combinations of various sizes of spaces. The movement of the MuMo draws multiple axes of rotation; the black and white masses are the results, the physical footprint of this circular motion. The axis intersections are treated like a three-dimensional chessboard, with alternating light and dark cubes.
The result produces a meaningful structure to this ballet of moving walls, where the whole is different from the sum of its parts.

The architecture of La Nouvelle Héloïse materializes a space with multiple ways to discover it, through a flexible and autonomous structural system.
This bicephalous space experiments with visual distortion; false mirrors, symmetries, and real time fish-eye effects. The offices stretch and contract, divide, add, and create polymorphic spaces, from remote workpods to generous meeting-rooms.
The walls glide like musical notes, merely touching each other, hugging and separating perpetually, as a continuous tribute to Héloïse and Abélard.
As a polymorphous space, a monochrome camouflage, the frame of La Nouvelle Héloïse dissolves the space with an ambiguity of its own, somewhere between a familiar space with retro references and the invention of a futuristic typology
