LOOPCAMP
Architectural Music Machine

A loop is a musical sequence, a sound circle; Loopcamp is a hybrid of housing and an organic musical instrument. It is a camp too, a shelter against Nevada’s frequent storms at the Burning Man festival. With the festival arises a spontaneous city of eighty thousand inhabitants settled on ancient Native American lands near the now-dry Lahontan Lake, seven hundred feet above sea level.

Black Rock City is the last social utopia since the creation of Israel’s first kibbutz. The temporary town is made of alternative visionary art and architecture such as capsules, geodesic domes, robots, balloons, art-cars, mobile homes and various installations, along with myriad electronic sounds.
With its post-industrial feeling and freewheeling environment, it recalls Archigram’s avant-garde drawings, specifically Instant City, in a contemporary way.

Loopcamp is on the playa, where the central zone of the housing plan is completely open to the desert.
Disc-shaped city, round temple, and circular tubes: the trinity of city, building, and material is gathered around the loop to welcome the sandstorms. Oriented to face the direction of major winds, the shelter is composed of recycled paper tubes, slightly beveled to create sounds triggered by air pressure.

The shelter results from tubes of various lengths and widths, producing a spectrum of melodies and sounds; treble from short tubes, and bass from long tubes.
Based on a circular plan, Loopcamp radiates surround-sound with different tones depending on the winds, creating a unique and constantly reinvented sonar experience, and a physical translation of movement in the city and of the elements.
