LA MAIN JAUNE

PARIS  I  FRANCE 2026

Ongoing construction, opening in 2026

efore becoming a myth of Parisian nightlife, La Main Jaune was an unexpected place. In 1979, it was transformed into a 1,500 m² Roller Disco by a young designer who was then largely unknown: Philippe Starck, for whom this marked his very first project. The venue quickly became a temple of disco and urban cultures, leaving a lasting imprint on Parisian days—and especially nights—for more than twenty years, until its closure in the early 2000s.

Long left dormant, this cathedral of celebration is now being revived as part of Réinventer Paris 2, the urban innovation call launched by the City of Paris in 2017, aimed at breathing new life into singular sites of the city’s heritage. Deeply rooted in the history of countercultures, roller culture and nightlife, La Main Jaune is now entering a new chapter.

The project involves a major rehabilitation, combining structural interventions, transformations of existing volumes and significant modifications to the building’s core structure, in order to meet contemporary standards and accommodate new uses. This reconfiguration also enables a substantial increase in capacity, a key condition for the relaunch of an ambitious cultural and event-driven program.

Following in the footsteps of major urban regeneration projects—from OXYGEN in La Défense to the Giza Observatory in EgyptStudio Malka has been commissioned to lead the rehabilitation, spatial design and artistic direction of the site. The challenge is to reconcile festive memory, technical constraints and contemporary cultural practices, without erasing the imprint of a place that, long before becoming an urban project, was a social phenomenon.
