DUNK HOUSE
California 2021
The Dunk House was created for a former NBA basketball player based in Los Angeles County’s Manhattan Beach.
Born from the fusion of basketball and architecture, the Dunk House is equipped with a courtyard boasting a full-size basketball court fully integrated in the building itself. The court is open to the city, in the great tradition of streetball.
The architecture is composed of two simple shifted blocks, one compact toward the street and the other wide open over the garden.
The villa merges color and materiality to develop a contemporary stealth camouflage approach; Studio Malka Architecture created the L.A.B. (Los Angeles Blue) color.
This polarized blue paint interacts with the various solar luminosities and automatically adjusts its color to match the Californian sky’s tones, merging the house with its surroundings.
In the backyard, a fully mirrored guest house reflects the sun’s rays on the shaded north facade of the house, causing both the total “disappearance” of the guest house and the embodiment of the main house via reflections.
The result is a contextual alliance between the very materiality of the house and its surroundings, proactively interacting with the streets of LA, the beach community, the sun’s latitude, and the sky’s intensity.
