MID-NITE

Reveal intangible spaces

This Parisian project is a total refurbishment of an existing building with a new vertical extension.

A fusion of the traditional Parisian roofscapes
Paris offers a rich panorama of roofs, most made of zinc, as it is low cost and quick to install. Some were made of copper, as seen in Le Grand Palais or L’Opera Garnier’s emblematic oxidized green roofs. The fusion of these two materials create brass, which is the main component of this project.
This alloy is both material and symbolic, a hybridization of Paris’s iconic visual identity.
Durable, fully recyclable, and indefinitely reusable, all the materials used were sourced after several generations of recycling.
This project is minimal and radical, consisting of two blocks: a black basement and a golden crown.
Juxtaposed, these two brutally superimposed masses contrast and unite in their own materiality; the pure and deep black block sits on the ground, absorbing and dissolving the light, while the golden and reflective rectangle levitates above.

An alliance of the sun and the soil
Mid-Nite is a direct reference to the midnight sun or polar day, during which the sun does not set, both in the North Pole and in the South Pole; indeed, Mid-Nite is an architectural entity in perpetual brilliance, an alliance of the sun and the soil.
During the day the gold block radiates, while it also perpetually illuminates the night in the presence of Paris’s famous lamp posts.
