BLACK BLOCK ART SHOP
“We propose a simple and light response, adhering to the term installation as well as to a very limited budget. Use the existing without transforming it, pulling a maximum of the physical and esthetic qualities of the building. Preserve a space free of partitions to permit the most freedom and fluidity of space. Create porosity: hear rain, see light and sun entering, see the city, increase accessibility in order to be open and welcoming. Consider the space as a place for living.” Anne Lacaton & Jean Philippe Vassal, on the rehabilitation of the Palais du Tokyo.
Conceived from Lacaton & Vassal’s proposal for the Palais du Tokyo, BlackBlock is composed of refrigeration units and display cases recycled from a mobile station from the suburbs of Stockholm. A thin neon light delimits the area without enclosing it. The construction details include brackets and bolts screwed onto the existing structure. The entire boutique was constructed exclusively by the Black Block staff.
